How to correctly maintain your boat for a longer life

Boating and fishing is a great relaxing activity but in order for your boat to stay in tip-top shape, you must care for it and clean it. Taking care of your boat after every trip adds value by protection and restoration it also stops the spread of any invasive species.

Knowing your boat is in its best shape every time you head out on the water is a feeling like none other, so here is some advice on how to keep your vessel clean.

Carpet – Possibly, the most abused part of the boat. The carpet takes a beating from people walking on it, dripping fishy slime and sometimes spilt beverages. To clean the carpet a power washer is your best bet to lift the dirt and grime from the fibers. Work from the bow to the stern and if you have a wet/dry vacuum you can use that to clean right away. If you are using a regular vacuum wait until the carpet is completely dry.

Livewells – Cleaning this part is important because it can become a breeding ground for bad odors and stains. Including this in your cleaning regimen will make for a better experience for you and the fish. Make sure you are using a non-toxic product because chemicals like bleach and detergents can have harmful effects on the fish kept inside. Clean the screens with a blast of water to clear them of deposits. For the interior, baking soda and water work magic for getting rid of smells and grime build-up. Mix a few tablespoons with hot water and scrub. Flush with water multiple times to make sure there is no residue.

Hull – This part of your boat takes abuse from the elements – sun and water. You may notice some stains or discoloration but they can be removed with some simple steps. Power wash the entire hull and don’t forget the crevices. While it is still wet, use a boat cleaner with sponge or soft brush. If you have a fiberglass boat use a wax or polish with a UV sunscreen after cleaning.
